After being diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, patients are typically only given the option of CPAP therapy. While CPAP machines are effective in treating Sleep Apnea, not everyone is an ideal candidate for a CPAP machine and in fact many patients (not to mention their spouses) find it very difficult to sleep with a CPAP. In our office, we regularly see patients that allow their Sleep Apnea to go untreated because they have been unable to tolerate a CPAP machine. However, there is an alternative.
Oral Appliance Therapy is a non-invasive, clinically proven alternative to CPAP for mild and moderate Sleep Apnea. The appliances are similar to a retainer or mouth guard and work by positioning your lower jaw and tongue forward to help open your airway, improve breathing and reduce snoring during sleep. The appliances can be made in a number of different styles and everyone's mouth is different, so when you meet with Dr. Eberhart, together we will determine which customized appliance will be most comfortable for you.
Advantages of Oral Appliance Therapy include:
- Easy to wear, easy to clean
- Virtually no maintenance
- Does not require power
- Covered by most Medical Insurance plans including Medicare
